A new study involving thousands of adolescents suggests that the amount of time spent playing video games is not the main factor behind cognitive difficulties. Instead, researchers found that compulsive gaming behavior - the inability to stop playing despite negative consequences - is what truly correlates with problems in thinking and focus.
The study, which analyzed data from several thousand young people, looked at both total gaming time and signs of problematic gaming. While many assume that long hours in front of a screen lead to attention issues or memory lapses, the results paint a different picture. Adolescents who played for many hours but did not show signs of compulsive behavior did not report significant cognitive struggles. In contrast, those who felt a loss of control over their gaming - such as prioritizing games over homework, sleep, or social activities - were more likely to experience difficulties with concentration, planning, and impulse control.
Researchers emphasize that this distinction matters for parents, educators, and clinicians. Simply limiting screen time may not address the underlying issue if a young person is already caught in a cycle of compulsive play. The findings suggest that interventions should focus on recognizing and treating gaming addiction symptoms rather than just counting hours. The study adds to a growing body of evidence that the quality of engagement with games - whether it feels like a choice or a compulsion - may be more important than the quantity of time spent.
