The surprise success of House House and Panic's Big Walk has industry watchers asking whether more developers should be betting on online co-op only experiences. The cooperative multiplayer adventure about teamwork and talking launched August 4th and has already crossed one million copies sold across platforms in roughly six days, with a peak of 46,000 concurrent Steam players.
What makes this particularly interesting is the game's profile. It comes from the team behind Untitled Goose Game, yet only six percent of Steam players overlap between the two titles. Big Walk also launched with no pre-release demos or betas, relying instead on a strong reveal trailer from The Game Awards in December 2023 and a longer gameplay showcase during Summer Game Fest 2025. That was enough to push it to nearly one million Steam wishlists at launch.
The player data tells a clear story about who is showing up. High overlap titles include PEAK at 75 percent, Lethal Company at 67 percent, and Meccha Chameleon at 48 percent. But there are also softer comps like Tabletop Simulator at 49 percent and Golf With Your Friends at 39 percent, suggesting the audience extends beyond the usual action-heavy co-op crowd. Positive review sentiment is dominated by mentions of friends, which makes sense given the game's design as a shared exploration experience.
House House has been open about the inspiration. During COVID lockdowns, the team regularly played games with friends overseas, including Raft, the We Were Here series, and various Roblox titles. That sense of virtual hangouts translated directly into Big Walk's design.
The precedent for co-op only success is well established. Hazelight Studios has built a career on exclusively cooperative titles like It Takes Two and Split Fiction, selling tens of millions of units. The We Were Here series has quietly become a multi-million seller. Even smaller indie efforts like Fears To Fathom: Scratch Creek have found audiences through co-op only design.
The argument for more games in this space is strong. These titles are highly streamable because the voice interactions between players create natural entertainment. They tend to be more accessible when they don't demand twitch reflexes. And the market for the next game to play with friends is clearly active and willing to spend.
Big Walk may not single-handedly usher in a new era of co-op only releases, but it demonstrates that the appetite is there. Developers who have been treating co-op as an optional mode rather than a core design pillar might want to reconsider. The players are waiting.
