The Strong National Museum of Play has officially inducted the original Dragon Quest into the World Video Game Hall of Fame. The 1986 role-playing game, known as Dragon Warrior in North America during its initial release, is widely credited with defining the console RPG genre. Developed by Chunsoft and published by Enix, the game introduced millions of players to turn-based combat, sprawling overworlds, and a sense of epic adventure that was rare on home consoles at the time.
The induction recognizes Dragon Quest's massive cultural impact, particularly in Japan, where it sparked a national phenomenon. The game's simple yet addictive loop of leveling up, exploring dungeons, and saving the kingdom of Alefgard laid the groundwork for countless sequels and imitators. Its character designs by Akira Toriyama, the artist behind Dragon Ball, gave the series a distinct visual identity that remains iconic today.
The Hall of Fame honors games that have influenced popular culture and the industry for decades. Dragon Quest joins a select group of titles that changed how people play. For many older fans, this induction is a long-overdue nod to the game that taught them that a hero could start with nothing and still save the world. The museum noted that the game's legacy is still alive in every modern JRPG that follows its formula.
