Nearly 100 never-before-seen Nintendo cartridges found in game shop

Nearly 100 never-before-seen Nintendo cartridges found in game shop

A routine inventory check at a small game shop has turned into one of the most significant finds in retro gaming history. Nearly 100 previously undocumented Nintendo cartridges have been uncovered, including a version of Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt that experts say has never been seen before.

The cartridges were found in a back storage room, tucked away in a box that had apparently been forgotten for decades. The shop owner, who asked not to be named, said the box was marked simply as "old stock" and was nearly thrown out during a recent cleanup.

What makes this discovery so remarkable is not just the quantity, but the specific variant of the games. The Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt combo cartridge features a label design and circuit board layout that does not match any known production run. Collectors and preservationists have spent years cataloging every known version of these iconic titles, and this one does not fit any existing record.

Early analysis suggests the cartridges may have been produced for a regional test market or possibly a promotional event that was never widely documented. The condition is also surprisingly good, with many of the cartridges still in their original plastic wrap.

Retro gaming historians are calling this a once in a lifetime find. The discovery could rewrite parts of Nintendo's early distribution history, especially regarding how the company packaged its most popular titles for smaller retailers. The shop is now working with preservation groups to properly document and archive the find, and there is already talk of a museum exhibition. For now, the cartridges remain locked away, awaiting further study.
