ESRB will not adopt PEGI age-rating changes in the US as it

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has confirmed it will not be adopting recent changes made to the European PEGI rating system, stating that such a move "could be confusing" for American consumers. The decision follows PEGI's announcement that it would begin considering elements like the presence of paid random item purchases, often called loot boxes, as a factor in determining age ratings.

In a firm statement, the ESRB emphasized its commitment to its current methodology. "There are no plans for ESRB to allow any factors outside the content and context of a game to influence the age rating," said the organization. The ESRB's ratings are primarily based on the intensity of content within a game, such as violence, language, and suggestive themes, rather than its business model.

Industry analysts note that this creates a divergent path for the two major rating systems. While PEGI moves to flag games with certain monetization features, the ESRB maintains that its existing parental control tools and disclosure labels for in-game purchases are sufficient. The board argues that introducing business model considerations into the age-rating process could blur the line between content appropriateness and consumer advice, ultimately leading to more uncertainty for parents shopping for games. This stance ensures that, for the foreseeable future, a game's age rating in the United States will be based solely on what players see and hear during gameplay.
