There is a lot of anger floating around right now, and it has found a strange focal point: the humble optical disc. People are upset about the slow death of physical media, sure, but if you listen closely, the frustration runs much deeper. It is not really about the plastic circle in a jewel case. It is about what that circle represents, and what its disappearance says about the world we are being asked to live in.
The disc was a promise. It meant you owned something. You could hold it, lend it to a friend, or put it on a shelf and know it would be there in twenty years. It did not require a login, a subscription, or a stable internet connection. It did not spy on you or change its terms of service overnight. When a company decides to stop making discs, they are not just changing a format. They are telling you that your relationship with the thing you love is temporary, and it is on their terms.
That is the real source of the anger. We are tired of being renters in every part of our lives. We rent our software, our music, our movies, and increasingly our cars and homes. Nothing is permanent. Everything is a service. The disc was one of the last tangible things you could actually own, and now it is being pulled away not because it is bad, but because it is inconvenient for the people selling it. They want control. They want to decide when you can watch, what you can watch, and for how long.
So when people rant about a missing disc drive or a delisted game, they are not being nostalgic or difficult. They are mourning a feeling of security. It is the last stand of people who want to believe that if you pay for something, it is yours. And the fact that this is becoming a radical idea is exactly why everyone is so mad. It was never about the disc. It was about the principle.
