The strange rendition of Manhattan found in the newly launched game Control Resonant features plenty of surreal sights. Buildings under siege by flying red creatures. City blocks that occasionally mirror themselves in the sky. But amid the chaos, there are also some surprisingly ordinary spaces.
Players will encounter a chain of fitness centers called Pulse Fitness and coffee shops trading under the Atlantis name. They will also stumble upon several art galleries, each a fully modeled interior that players can walk through. The galleries are franchised, all bearing the name Konstig, which comes close to the Swedish word for strange.
One space displays colorful paintings of women whose skin is marked with stripes. Another holds photographs of twisted, gnarled trees. There is no combat inside these galleries, no red Hiss monsters lurking. Some contain crates packed with power-ups for Dylan Faden, the brooding protagonist. One gallery even includes a puzzle he must solve.
Mostly, though, the galleries serve the same purpose they do in the real Manhattan: as exhibition spaces for art. And the art is genuine. Some pieces were created by artists at Remedy Entertainment, the game's Finnish studio. A surprising amount, it turns out, was made by their parents.
