'Dungeons & Dragons' Rolls for 'Star Wars' and 'World of Warcraft'

'Dungeons & Dragons' Rolls for 'Star Wars' and 'World of Warcraft'

The tabletop roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons is officially branching out beyond its own fantasy settings. The company behind the game has announced a new initiative that will bring other major franchises into its rule system. The first two properties to get this treatment are Star Wars and World of Warcraft. This move mirrors a similar strategy used by the trading card game Magic: The Gathering, which has featured crossover sets with many popular brands.

For Star Wars fans, this is not the first time the galaxy far, far away has had a tabletop game. There were previous editions of a Star Wars roleplaying game, but those used different mechanics. This new version will use the current Dungeons & Dragons rules, which many players already know well. That means character classes like the Fighter or the Wizard will be reimagined for Jedi, smugglers, and other roles from the Star Wars universe. The Force will likely be handled as a special kind of magic or a unique class feature.

World of Warcraft is also a natural fit for a tabletop adaptation. The video game is already heavily inspired by classic fantasy tropes, many of which come from Dungeons & Dragons itself. Players can expect to see familiar races like Orcs, Tauren, and Night Elves translated into the tabletop format. The game's many dungeons and raids could also be turned into adventure modules for groups to play through.

No release dates have been given yet. The announcement only confirms that these projects are in development. It is likely that more details will come out over the next year. This is a big step for Dungeons & Dragons, which has seen a surge in popularity in recent years. By bringing in these two massive franchises, the game is aiming to attract both new players and longtime fans who want to try something different. It also opens the door for even more crossovers down the line, depending on how well these first two are received.
