Electronic Arts has reversed its controversial plan to include microtransactions in the upcoming "College Football 27" title. The decision comes after weeks of sustained backlash from the game's player base and prominent content creators, who argued that the monetization system undermined the authenticity of the college sports experience.
In a brief statement released this morning, the publisher confirmed that all premium currency purchases and pay-to-win mechanics have been stripped from the game's final build. "We heard the community loud and clear," the statement read. "Our goal is to deliver the most immersive college football simulation possible, and that means removing anything that distracts from the competition on the field."
The about-face is a notable shift for EA, which had initially defended the microtransactions as optional enhancements for Ultimate Team mode. Critics, however, pointed out that the system heavily favored players who spent real money, creating an uneven playing field in online matches. Several high-profile streamers had pledged to boycott the title if the system remained.
Analysts expect the removal to have a mixed impact on revenue. While the upfront sales of "College Football 27" will likely remain strong, the loss of recurring microtransaction income could affect EA's quarterly projections. Still, the company appears willing to accept that trade-off to repair its reputation with a passionate fanbase that has waited years for the series' return.
The game is still scheduled for its summer release.
