With IO Interactive's "007 First Light" on the horizon, it is a good time to look back at the long and storied history of James Bond in video games. The secret agent has starred in dozens of titles across multiple decades, with results ranging from forgettable to legendary. Here are the absolute best.
At the top of the list sits "GoldenEye 007" for the Nintendo 64. It is the game that defined the first-person shooter for a generation. Its split-screen multiplayer mode was a cultural phenomenon, turning friends into enemies over proximity mines and the iconic Golden Gun. The single-player campaign, while rough by today's standards, was a masterclass in level design and stealth.
A close second is "007: Nightfire" for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. It captured the feel of a Pierce Brosnan-era Bond film perfectly. The game featured excellent driving sections, a gripping story, and a multiplayer mode that, while not as famous as GoldenEye's, was incredibly fun. The guided rocket launcher and the briefcase satellite were weapons of pure joy.
For a more modern take, "GoldenEye 007: Reloaded" for the Xbox 360 and PS3 deserves a mention. It was a reimagining of the original, featuring Daniel Craig's likeness and a more contemporary gameplay style. While purists may scoff, it offered a solid campaign and a surprisingly deep multiplayer mode.
Finally, "James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing" stands out as a third-person action game that felt like a lost Bond film. It starred Pierce Brosnan and featured a cast of Hollywood actors. The on-foot combat and vehicle sequences were well-integrated, and the story was genuinely engaging.
These games prove that when done right, a James Bond video game can be just as thrilling as the movies themselves.
