'SOL Shogunate' is a samurai space opera set on the moon, but with an aerospace engineer making sure it's 'getting the science right'

A new space opera called SOL Shogunate is blending feudal Japanese aesthetics with hard science fiction, setting its action on a colonized moon. But unlike many sci-fi projects that wave away physics for the sake of a cool scene, this one has an aerospace engineer on the team making sure the rockets, orbits, and lunar hazards actually check out.

Chaos Manufacturing CEO Guy Costantini and aerospace engineer Taylore McClurg recently discussed the challenge of building a believable lunar adventure. The story follows a samurai-inspired warrior class on the moon, but the creators wanted more than just stylized zero-gravity sword fights. McClurg's job is to ground the spacecraft, the environmental suits, and the orbital mechanics in real engineering principles. That means accounting for the moon's lower gravity, its lack of atmosphere, and the brutal temperature swings between lunar day and night.

Costantini explained that the goal is to make the world feel striking without breaking the audience's suspension of disbelief. They are not trying to teach a physics lesson, but they want the technology to feel like it could actually exist. McClurg runs the numbers on propulsion systems and life support, ensuring that when a character fires a thruster or opens an airlock, the result matches what would really happen on the moon.

The result is a space opera that aims to honor both the samurai genre and the laws of physics. It is a careful balance between dramatic storytelling and technical accuracy, one that the team hopes will stand out in a crowded field of sci-fi projects.
