A former Sega of America executive has launched a blistering attack on legendary game developer Yuji Naka, calling him "the most miserable person" he has ever worked with in his entire career. Mike Fischer, who previously served as president and CEO of Sega of America, did not hold back when discussing the Sonic the Hedgehog co-creator.
"He is literally the most miserable person I have ever worked with in games or anything else in my life, just a horrible human being," Fischer said in a recent interview. The comments mark one of the most direct and personal criticisms ever made by a games industry veteran about a fellow developer.
Fischer's remarks stand out because industry veterans rarely speak so openly about former colleagues, especially someone of Naka's stature. Naka is widely respected for his work on Sonic, Nights into Dreams, and other classic Sega titles. However, accounts of his difficult personality have circulated for years.
Naka left Sega in 2006 and later worked at Square Enix and Prope. In recent years, he was arrested and convicted for insider trading related to a Dragon Quest mobile game, serving a suspended prison sentence. Fischer's comments add a new layer to the complicated legacy of a developer whose technical genius was often matched by reports of a difficult temperament.
