Microsoft is rolling out a new feature that lets Xbox owners convert their physical game discs into digital licenses. The program, which starts with Xbox Insiders, will support thousands of titles across the Xbox One and Series X libraries. Once converted, players no longer need to keep the disc in the drive to play, and the game becomes tied to their account.
The process is straightforward. You insert the disc, the console verifies the game, and then it creates a digital entitlement on your profile. After that, the disc is essentially a coaster. You can delete and reinstall the game anytime from your library, just like any other digital purchase. This is a big deal for people who have been holding onto physical collections but want the convenience of going all-digital without rebuying games.
There are a few catches. The feature only works on the console where you do the conversion. You cannot share the digital copy with family members the same way you could with a physical disc. Also, the disc has to be in good condition and from the same region as your account. Microsoft has not said if this will be a permanent option or just a limited-time offer for Insiders, but the early feedback suggests it could become a standard tool for everyone later this year.
This move puts Xbox ahead of Sony, which has not offered any similar disc-to-digital program for the PlayStation 5. It also gives Xbox a clear answer to the growing trend of all-digital consoles, like the Series S. For now, Insiders can test the feature and report bugs. If all goes well, expect a wider rollout soon.
