A mother in the United States says she was locked out of her son's Roblox parental controls after the platform's facial recognition system mistakenly identified her 9-year-old child as a teenager. The error, which occurred during a routine age verification check, prevented her from adjusting privacy settings, monitoring chat, or setting playtime limits for weeks.
The woman, who asked not to be named, told reporters that her son tried to access a voice chat feature that requires age verification. Roblox uses a "biometric age estimation" tool that scans a user's face to confirm they are over 13. The system flagged the boy as older, automatically switching his account to a teen profile. That change removed the parent's ability to manage the account through the standard family dashboard.
"When I logged in to check his settings, the parental controls were just gone," she said. "It said the account was now managed by the user, not a parent." She spent days contacting Roblox support, sending photos of her son's birth certificate and her own ID. The company eventually reset the account after a manual review, but the incident raises questions about the reliability of automated age checks.
Roblox has pushed facial recognition as a way to keep younger children safe from adult content and strangers. Critics argue that false positives can actually undermine parental oversight. The company says it is working to improve accuracy and that users can appeal mistakes. For this family, the fix came too late to prevent a week of worry.
