The new PC title Eldegarde attempts a novel fusion by injecting MMORPG mechanics into the high-stakes extraction shooter genre. This conceptual blend promises a unique experience, building persistent character progression atop tense, loot-focused excursions. Players venture into hostile zones, complete objectives, and must successfully escape to keep their hard-earned gear and experience, all while developing a lasting avatar much like in a traditional online role-playing game.
While the core idea is undoubtedly intriguing, the execution ultimately feels too mundane to sustain long-term engagement. The moment-to-moment gameplay often falls into repetitive patterns, lacking the dynamic excitement or depth needed to make each extraction feel uniquely thrilling. Progression systems, though present, fail to provide compelling enough rewards to grind through the sometimes-sluggish combat and predictable mission structures.
The result is a game with a strong foundational premise that struggles to capitalize on its own innovation. Eldegarde delivers a competent but underwhelming loop that may capture the interest of genre enthusiasts for a short while. However, without more varied content, sharper gameplay, and a greater sense of adventure, it is unlikely to command a dedicated player base for the long haul. It stands as an interesting proof of concept awaiting more polish and inspiration.
