Few Platformers Have More to Say Than This Double Fine Classic

Few Platformers Have More to Say Than This Double Fine Classic

Double Fine has always been a studio that marches to the beat of its own drum. From the moment Tim Schafer founded the company, it has produced games that feel handcrafted, weird in the best way, and deeply human. Psychonauts 2 stands as one of the strongest examples of that philosophy, and with the studio now operating independently again after its time under Xbox, there is good reason to hope the team keeps building on that legacy.

Psychonauts 2 is not just a sequel that plays it safe. It takes the inventive level design of the original and refines it into something tighter, more emotional, and more confident. Each mental world you explore reflects a character's inner struggles, turning abstract ideas like anxiety, regret, and addiction into playable spaces. That is rare in any genre, and almost unheard of in a platformer. The game manages to be funny without undercutting its sincerity, and it handles heavy themes with a surprising amount of care.

The platforming itself is precise and varied, with abilities that keep encounters fresh and level layouts that reward curiosity. Boss fights feel like events rather than obstacles, and the art direction gives every screen a distinct identity. It sits comfortably alongside the best the genre has offered in recent years, and it does so while telling a story that actually means something.

Now that Double Fine is charting its own course again, the hope is simple. More games with this level of ambition, this much heart, and this willingness to treat players like adults. Psychonauts 2 proved the studio can do it. There is no reason to stop now.
