Atari signs deal with Universal to make 10 films based on classic video games

Atari signs deal with Universal to make 10 films based on classic video games

Atari and Universal Pictures have struck a deal to produce 10 feature films based on the company's library of classic video games. The partnership aims to turn iconic titles from the 1970s and 1980s into a full slate of movies, though specific games have not yet been announced.

The announcement comes as Hollywood continues to mine the video game industry for intellectual property. Atari, once a dominant force in home gaming, holds the rights to a number of well-known franchises including Asteroids, Centipede, and Missile Command. While the company has licensed its games for film and television before, this marks a more structured, multi-film agreement with a major studio.

Universal will handle distribution and production, while Atari will provide creative input on how the games are adapted. The goal is to treat each property as a standalone film rather than forcing them into a shared universe. Atari's CEO has stated that the company wants to respect the original gameplay and visual style while making the stories accessible to modern audiences.

No directors, writers, or release dates have been set. The first film in the deal is expected to enter pre-production sometime next year.
