A Guide to the Reality Fracture Mechanics in Magic: The Gathering

Magic: The Gathering players can start reviewing the Reality Fractured mechanics now to prepare for the upcoming pre-release events. The set introduces several new keywords and rules that change how matches play out, so understanding them early will help both casual and competitive players build better decks.

The first major mechanic is Fracture. When a permanent with Fracture is dealt damage, its controller exiles the top card of their library. If that exiled card shares a card type with the damaged permanent, the permanent is sacrificed. This adds a layer of risk to blocking and attacking, since every point of damage can trigger a chain reaction.

Next is Riftwalk. Creatures with Riftwalk can only be blocked by creatures that share a color with them. This makes multicolor decks more flexible and rewards players who spread their mana base across two or three colors. Riftwalk also pairs well with effects that change a creature's color, creating unexpected combat tricks.

The set also brings back Echoing, a mechanic that copies an instant or sorcery for each opponent you have. In multiplayer formats like Commander, Echoing spells can swing the game quickly, especially when combined with cards that reduce casting costs.

Finally, Reality Anchor is a static ability that prevents permanents from being exiled. This directly counters Fracture and other exile based removal, making it a valuable sideboard option.

Pre-release events begin soon, so players should test these mechanics in casual games first. Building a deck around one or two keywords usually works better than trying to use all of them at once.
