3 ways The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake can improve upon the original game

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is not only the highest-rated video game ever made, with a near-perfect 99 score on Metacritic, but it is also still considered the gold standard for action-adventure games. However, even a masterpiece can benefit from a modern touch. If Nintendo decides to revisit Hyrule with a full remake, there are three clear areas where the new version could surpass the 1998 classic.

First, the combat system needs a complete overhaul. The original's Z-targeting was revolutionary for its time, but it feels clunky by today's standards. A remake could implement fluid, modern combat mechanics similar to those in Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom. This would allow for smoother swordplay, more dynamic enemy reactions, and the ability to dodge or parry with precision. The iconic boss fights against Gohma or Ganondorf would feel far more intense with a responsive, skill-based system.

Second, the game's world, while charming, suffers from long stretches of empty space. The Hyrule Field was a technical marvel in 1998, but now it feels like a dull corridor between locations. A remake could populate the overworld with more secrets, side quests, and environmental storytelling. Imagine stumbling upon a hidden grove with a new mini-dungeon or finding a wandering merchant who offers a unique side story. This would make the journey between locations as engaging as the destinations themselves.

Finally, the remake must address the dated inventory and item management. The original forced players to pause constantly to equip the Iron Boots or switch between the Hookshot and the Bow. A modern remake could introduce a quick-select wheel or assign items to shoulder buttons, allowing players to switch tools on the fly without breaking the flow of combat or exploration. This simple quality-of-life change would make the game feel far more polished and less like a relic of the 90s.
