Why Take-Two Won’t Share ‘Unprecedented’ ‘Grand Theft Auto VI’ Pre-Order Numbers

Take-Two Interactive is holding back on releasing specific pre-order numbers for Grand Theft Auto VI, and CEO Strauss Zelnick says that is a deliberate choice. Speaking to investors recently, Zelnick explained that the company prefers not to put out figures that could be misinterpreted or create false expectations. He called the level of anticipation for the game "unprecedented" but declined to share exact sales data.

Zelnick said that sharing raw pre-order counts can be misleading. For one thing, pre-orders do not always translate directly into day-one purchases. Some players cancel, some switch platforms, and some simply wait for reviews. He also pointed out that the number alone does not reflect the health of the business or the quality of the game. Instead of focusing on a single metric, Take-Two wants to evaluate the launch over a longer period.

The decision is unusual for a title of this size. Most major publishers use pre-order numbers as a way to build momentum and show confidence. But Zelnick argues that with GTA VI, the hype is already so strong that sharing numbers would only add noise. He also noted that the company has a history of being cautious with public statements, especially after past criticism over overly optimistic forecasts.

Fans and analysts have been trying to guess the scale of pre-orders for months. Some estimates suggest the game could break records before it even ships. But Take-Two is staying quiet, at least for now. Zelnick says the company will share meaningful updates when the time is right, but for now, the focus is on making sure the game delivers on its promise. That, he says, is more important than any number.
