The French video game workers' union STJV has issued a call for the entire video game sector to walk off the job on June 25. In a statement released earlier this week, the union sharply criticized what it described as widespread incompetence in project management across the French gaming industry. The strike is intended to protest poor working conditions, chronic overwork, and what the union sees as a systemic failure by studio leadership to manage development cycles responsibly.
STJV representatives argued that workers are frequently blamed for delays and technical issues that actually stem from poor planning and unrealistic deadlines set by management. The union is demanding better job security, fairer compensation, and a fundamental shift in how projects are overseen. They are urging developers, artists, testers, and all other video game employees to participate, regardless of their studio's size or reputation.
The call for a strike comes at a time when the global video game industry has seen widespread layoffs and studio closures. While the STJV's action is focused on France, it highlights a growing frustration among game developers worldwide who feel their labor is undervalued. The union hopes that a unified work stoppage will send a clear message to executives and publishers that the current model is unsustainable.
