Tired of $70 Games? Build Your Own Raspberry Pi-Powered Retro Video Game Console Instead

Tired of $70 Games? Build Your Own Raspberry Pi-Powered Retro Video Game Console Instead

If you are tired of shelling out seventy dollars or more for a single new video game, there is a better way to spend your time and money. Instead of buying the latest AAA title, you can build a retro gaming console that plays thousands of classic titles from Nintendo, Sega, and Sony. All you need is a Raspberry Pi board, a few cheap parts, and a couple of hours on a weekend.

The process is much simpler than most people expect. You do not need to be a programmer or an electrical engineer. The basic idea is to install a free operating system called RetroPie onto a microSD card, then plug that card into a Raspberry Pi. After that, you connect a USB controller, a power cable, and an HDMI cable to your TV. The whole setup can cost under fifty dollars, which is less than the price of one new game.

The hardest part is finding the game files, which are often called ROMs. You should only use games you already own, but many people find that the fun is in the setup itself. You can also add a small case and a fan to keep the board cool. The result is a tiny machine that fits in your palm but can play everything from Super Mario Bros. to Final Fantasy VII.

The best part is that you can keep upgrading it later. Want wireless controllers? Add Bluetooth. Want to play arcade games? Add a joystick. It is a hobby that keeps giving, and it beats paying full price for a game you might finish in one weekend. So skip the store, grab a Pi, and start playing.
