A small indie studio has turned the concept of "text-based gaming" completely upside down. Torizon Telecom, known for experimental visual projects, announced their latest game this week, and its graphics are a genuine head-scratcher. The entire 3D world is constructed from text characters.
This is not a simple ASCII art filter applied over a standard polygon model. The developers built the game's environments, characters, and objects using actual letters, numbers, and symbols from the standard keyboard. Each wall is a dense block of repeating characters. A character's face is formed from carefully placed punctuation and brackets. The lighting and shadows are simulated by varying the density and weight of the text, making some areas appear darker than others.
The result is a strange hybrid of a retro terminal screen and a modern 3D engine. Players can walk around these text-based objects, look up at them, and see them from any angle, just like in a standard game. The studio claims that every single visual element is rendered in real time using a custom font engine that treats each glyph as a tiny pixel.
Torizon Telecom says the project started as a technical challenge. They wanted to see if they could push the limits of what a simple text console could do. The game, currently titled "Glyph," is a first-person exploration title set in a strange, abstract world. There is no release date yet, but early footage shows a surprisingly immersive environment made entirely of the alphabet.
