The German regulator has called for a more flexible oversight of online gambling

The Joint Gambling Authority of the German Federal States, known as the GGL, wants to move its oversight of online gambling toward a more flexible model. The agency argues that business models, technologies, and forms of illegal gambling are changing faster than German legislation can match.

According to the regulator, the current legal framework struggles to keep pace with a market where new operators and novel products appear quickly. That gap, the GGL warns, leaves room for unlicensed providers to attract players and complicates efforts to channel bettors toward legal, supervised offerings.

The authority's position points to a broader debate about how Germany regulates its online gambling sector. Strict rules have been defended as necessary for player protection, but critics say rigid requirements can push users toward black market sites that ignore safety standards.
