The publisher behind "Grand Theft Auto VI" is shifting its strategy toward making games more efficiently, with its chief executive warning that some titles may not get made unless production becomes cheaper.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick told investors that the company is aiming to be "smarter" about how it develops games. He pointed out that ballooning budgets for blockbuster titles cannot continue indefinitely. Some games, he said, simply will not be made if their costs are not brought under control.
Zelnick did not name specific projects that might be at risk. But his comments come as the industry faces a period of intense pressure. Major studios have laid off thousands of workers over the past two years. Development costs for top-tier games now regularly exceed hundreds of millions of dollars, and timelines stretch for half a decade or more.
Take-Two is best known for the "Grand Theft Auto" series. The next entry, "Grand Theft Auto VI," is expected in fall 2025. It is widely considered the most anticipated game in years. Analysts believe its budget is among the highest ever for a video game.
Zelnick suggested that not every game needs to be a massive, expensive project. He argued that smaller, more focused titles can still succeed if they are built with discipline. The company will look for ways to trim waste without sacrificing quality.
The message is a clear shift from the industry's recent obsession with scale. For years, publishers chased ever-larger worlds and longer playtimes. Now, the math is changing. Zelnick's warning signals that even the biggest players are rethinking how much they are willing to spend.
