Sony PlayStation owners may soon see compensation from a class-action lawsuit over digital store practices. A preliminary settlement agreement has been approved, making up to $7.8 million available for refunds. The case centered on claims that Sony overcharged customers for digital games and in-game items on the PlayStation Store.
Eligible users could receive compensation in the form of cash-value PlayStation Network account credits deposited directly into their PSN accounts. The exact amount each person gets will depend on how many valid claims are filed. Not everyone who owns a PlayStation will qualify. The settlement covers specific purchases made during a set time period, likely involving digital content bought through the PlayStation Store.
Sony has not admitted any wrongdoing as part of the settlement. The agreement is still preliminary, meaning a final approval hearing is needed before any payments go out. Users who think they may be eligible should watch for official notices from the settlement administrator. Those notices will explain how to file a claim and what documentation is required. The deadline to submit a claim will be announced once the court gives final approval. Until then, no money or credits will be distributed.
