Josef Fares has built Hazelight Studios into one of the most reliable names in cooperative gaming. The Swedish developer, known for his unfiltered award show speeches and genuine passion for the medium, has delivered three titles that each push split screen and online co-op design in different directions. Every game requires two players, no exceptions, and that commitment to partnership has become the studio's signature.
Starting with the earliest release, A Way Out arrived in 2018 and proved the concept worked. The prison break story follows two inmates who must trust each other to escape and survive. It blends stealth, action, and quiet character moments, though some sequences feel uneven compared to what came later. It earns its place as a great game and a strong foundation.
It Takes Two came next in 2021 and swept awards season, including Game of the Year. The platforming is inventive, the level themes constantly shift, and the emotional story about a crumbling marriage gives every mechanic a purpose. This is the studio's absolute banger, a high point few co-op games have matched.
Split Fiction, the newest release, pushes ambition even further by weaving science fiction and fantasy worlds together. The pacing is relentless and the variety is staggering, though the narrative does not land quite as hard as its predecessor. It sits comfortably between the other two, a great game that hints at even bigger things ahead.
Three games, three wins. Hazelight has yet to miss.
