Origin Lab has raised $8 million in funding to build a marketplace that bridges the gap between video game developers and artificial intelligence companies. The startup aims to help game studios monetize their proprietary data by selling it to AI labs that need high-quality, licensed information for training world models.
The concept is straightforward. Many video game companies sit on vast amounts of rich, structured data from player interactions, physics simulations, and 3D environments. This data is valuable for AI researchers building models that need to understand spatial reasoning, cause and effect, and complex decision-making. However, most game studios lack the infrastructure or legal frameworks to sell this data safely. Origin Lab plans to handle the licensing, privacy compliance, and technical formatting required to make these transactions smooth.
The $8 million round was led by investors who see a growing demand for ethically sourced, non-scraped data. As AI companies face increasing scrutiny over how they collect training material, licensed data from controlled environments like video games offers a cleaner alternative. For game developers, this creates a new revenue stream without disrupting their core business.
Origin Lab's platform will act as a middleman, allowing AI labs to browse and purchase datasets while ensuring game companies retain control over what is shared. The funding will be used to expand the team and build out the technical infrastructure needed to handle large-scale data transfers. The company expects to onboard its first game studio partners later this year.
