The next chapter in the post-apocalyptic shooter series is coming in February, and the latest previews confirm that developer 4A Games is pushing the current generation of hardware hard. Metro 2039 will run at a native 4K resolution with a smooth 60 frames per second on both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Even better, the game includes full ray tracing support for lighting and reflections without sacrificing that performance target.
The new footage showcases the series' signature blend of tense survival horror and desperate firefights. Players will still need to manage gas mask filters, scavenge for bullets, and clean their weapons in the irradiated ruins of the Moscow metro. But the jump to the new engine tech brings a level of visual detail that was previously only possible on high-end PCs. Dynamic shadows stretch across crumbling tunnels, and light filters through dust and smoke in real time.
The game also introduces a few new mechanics to keep veterans on their toes. The environment is more reactive, with enemies that use flanking tactics and environmental hazards that can turn a simple firefight into a chaotic scramble. While the core loop remains familiar, the increased frame rate makes the combat feel noticeably more responsive than the previous entries. For those who own the last generation consoles, the game will still launch there, but it will be capped at lower resolutions and frame rates. The February release date is set for all platforms, and the team has promised a day one patch to address any lingering stability issues.
