A former Valve writer has pulled back the curtain on a strange chapter in the company's history, revealing that the 2009 Left 4 Dead 2 trailer leak was actually a staged move to avoid trouble with the ratings board. Chet Faliszek, who worked on the game, shared the story in a recent interview, explaining that Valve's lawyers were so worried about the ESRB's reaction that they kept a tight leash on the writing team.
According to Faliszek, the ESRB had strict rules about what could be shown before a game was officially rated. Valve wanted to release a hype trailer for Left 4 Dead 2, but the content, which included heavy violence and gore, might have triggered an "Adults Only" rating if submitted early. That would have hurt sales, since many retailers refuse to stock AO games. So instead of waiting, Valve decided to leak the trailer on purpose, making it look like an accident. The plan worked, and the ESRB eventually gave the game a "Mature" rating after the dust settled.
But the lawyers did not stop there. Faliszek described how they "babysat" the writers during development, sitting in on meetings and reviewing every line of dialogue. They were terrified that a stray joke or overly graphic description would push the game into AO territory. Writers had to carefully phrase things, avoiding certain words or imagery that could be flagged. It was a frustrating process, but Faliszek admitted that it forced the team to be clever with their writing, finding ways to imply violence without spelling it out.
The story sheds light on how much pressure publishers face from ratings boards, and how far they will go to protect their bottom line. Faliszek, who later co-wrote the Portal games, said the experience taught him that creative freedom often comes with legal strings attached.
