Konami has filed a lawsuit in an effort to track down the person responsible for leaking the source code of Metal Gear Solid 2. The Japanese gaming company is seeking damages and an injunction, arguing that the leak violated copyright law and exposed proprietary development materials to the public.
The source code for the 2001 stealth classic appeared online earlier this year, allowing players and modders to dig into the game's inner workings. While some fans celebrated the leak as a way to preserve gaming history, Konami views it as a serious breach of its intellectual property. The company claims the leak originated from an internal server and that the code was never meant for public release.
Legal documents indicate Konami is using subpoenas to identify the individual who uploaded the files. The company is also demanding that hosting platforms remove any copies of the code still available for download. This is not the first time Konami has faced a major leak. In recent years, internal game builds and design documents for several titles have surfaced online, often traced back to former employees or contractors.
Metal Gear Solid 2 remains one of the most analyzed games in the series, known for its complex narrative and technical innovations. The leak gives an unprecedented look at how the game was built, including unused content and debug tools. However, Konami's legal move signals that the company still sees the code as a trade secret, not a piece of history to be shared freely.
The case is ongoing, and no arrests have been made.
