Graveyard Keeper 2 Uses 3D Models Behind Its Pixel Art Look

Graveyard Keeper 2 Uses 3D Models Behind Its Pixel Art Look

The developers behind Graveyard Keeper 2 have revealed that nearly every object in the game is actually rendered in 3D, despite the pixel art style that defines the series. In a recent breakdown of the game's visual approach, the team explained that the sequel moves away from the purely 2D pipeline used in the first game. Trees, buildings, characters, and props are all built as three dimensional models, then processed through a custom rendering setup that gives them a flat, hand drawn appearance.

The shift solves several problems that plagued the original. Lighting now behaves consistently across scenes, shadows fall correctly on uneven ground, and objects can rotate or animate without the need for hundreds of hand drawn frames. The team noted that this method also speeds up production, since artists can adjust a model once instead of redrawing it from multiple angles.

Despite the technical change, the final look stays close to the first game. The pixel filter, limited color palette, and chunky outlines remain intact. According to the developers, the goal was never to make the game look modern or smooth. It was to keep the grim, storybook charm while gaining the flexibility that 3D tools provide.

Graveyard Keeper 2 is currently in development. A release date has not been announced.
