Far Cry 4 Creative Director Defends Fans After TV Boss Suggests Skipping Cutscenes

Far Cry 4 Creative Director Defends Fans After TV Boss Suggests Skipping Cutscenes

Far Cry 4 creative director Alex Hutchinson has publicly pushed back against recent comments from acclaimed showrunner Noah Hawley, arguing that video game fans simply want their medium to be "respected, not dismissed." The controversy erupted after Hawley, known for Fargo and the upcoming Alien: Earth series, suggested during a recent interview that players might as well skip cutscenes anyway, sparking widespread frustration across gaming communities.

Hutchinson, who also served as creative director on Assassin's Creed III, took to social media to voice his disappointment. "The idea that cutscenes are disposable or that skipping them is the default experience misses the point entirely," he wrote. "For many of us, the narrative is the reason we play. Fans aren't asking for reverence—they're asking for the same basic respect any other storytelling medium receives."

The original remarks from Hawley, who is currently developing a television adaptation of the Far Cry franchise, suggested that gameplay should take priority over narrative moments, a stance that many interpreted as dismissive of the craft behind video game storytelling. Hutchinson countered by highlighting the immense effort developers pour into cinematic sequences, character arcs, and world-building. "When you spend years writing, directing, and animating a scene, hearing someone imply it's optional filler stings," he added.

The backlash underscores a long-standing tension between traditional Hollywood creators and the gaming industry, where interactive storytelling is often undervalued. Hutchinson concluded his response by urging critics to engage with games as complete artistic works. "We don't tell film directors that their dialogue is just filler between explosions. Let's extend the same courtesy to game developers."
