I sat down to try Don't Let It Starve, a new roguelike game where you build bento boxes, and over an hour later I was hungry and still playing. The game combines two things I love: food and watching numbers increase.
The premise is simple. You run a small bento shop. Customers come in with orders. You have ingredients. You arrange food in compartments. But nothing is that simple in a roguelike. Each run brings new ingredients, new customer demands, and new challenges. You might start with rice and salmon, but soon you are dealing with pickled vegetables, tamagoyaki, and mysterious sauces that appear only on certain runs.
What makes it work is the tension. You have limited space in each box. Customers have preferences. Some want balance. Others want maximum protein. A few just want as much fried food as possible. You have to arrange everything before a timer runs out. Get it right and your shop earns reputation. Get it wrong and customers leave unhappy.
The game keeps you coming back because each run unlocks something new. A better cutting board. A faster rice cooker. A secret recipe from a wandering chef. The progression feels meaningful. You are not just making bento boxes. You are building a tiny culinary empire.
But be warned. Do not play this game on an empty stomach. The pixel art food looks too good. The descriptions of steaming rice and crispy tempura will make you crave lunch. I stopped playing only because I had to eat. And I am pretty sure I will play again after.
