The creative director of Warframe has weighed in on the struggles of Destiny 2, calling the game's current state "existentially threatening" for the live-service shooter genre. In a recent interview, Rebecca Ford, who leads development on the long-running sci-fi looter, did not hold back her assessment of Bungie's flagship title. She argued that the entire market for games like Warframe and Destiny relies on the health of its biggest competitors.
Ford noted that Warframe and Destiny have existed in parallel for nearly a decade, each carving out its own audience. However, she warned that if a pillar as large as Destiny 2 were to collapse, it would send a damaging signal to publishers and investors about the viability of live-service games. "When a game of that scale stumbles, it makes everyone look at the model and ask if it's broken," she said. She emphasized that Warframe has maintained greater consistency over time by sticking to a clear vision, but acknowledged that the industry's perception of the genre is fragile.
Her comments come as Destiny 2 faces significant player dissatisfaction, layoffs at Bungie, and delays to its next expansion. Ford's perspective suggests that the fate of these games is more interconnected than players might realize, with a major failure potentially chilling investment across the board. For now, Warframe continues to thrive, but its creative director is clearly watching the horizon with concern.
