The MSU Video Game Design Club and the Association for Computing Machinery have opened the second annual Fright Byte game jam, revealing the official theme during Monday's kickoff. A game jam challenges participants to build a complete video game from scratch within a short window, and this year's theme is "existential."
The event brings together students from different backgrounds who share an interest in game development. Teams will handle every part of the process, from concept and coding to art, sound, and testing. Organizers say the tight deadline pushes competitors to make quick decisions and focus on finishing a playable product rather than chasing perfection.
The existential theme gives participants room to explore strange, thoughtful, or unsettling ideas. Past entries have ranged from simple puzzle games to atmospheric horror experiences. Judges will likely consider creativity, technical execution, and how well each project fits the theme.
The jam also serves as a chance for newer developers to learn from more experienced peers. Mentors and club members are expected to offer guidance throughout the competition. Organizers hope the event strengthens the local game development community and encourages students to keep building projects after the jam ends. Winners are set to be announced once judging wraps up.
