'Chipflation' is driving up the cost of video games and consoles, and prices show no signs of easing

Video game prices have been climbing for years, and a San Diego shop owner says the trend shows no sign of slowing down, with an economic phenomenon known as "chipflation" largely to blame.

The term describes what happens when the cost of the semiconductors inside gaming hardware rises faster than the finished product's overall price. Consoles, graphics cards, and even handheld devices depend on specialized chips, and when those components get more expensive, manufacturers pass the cost along to buyers.

Several forces are pushing chip prices upward. Demand for advanced processors has surged thanks to artificial intelligence data centers, which compete for the same manufacturing capacity that supplies the gaming industry. At the same time, building new fabrication plants takes years and billions of dollars, so supply cannot quickly catch up. Trade restrictions and tariffs add another layer of expense to the global supply chain.

The result is visible on store shelves. New consoles launch at higher prices than their predecessors, and mid-generation refreshes often cost more without dramatic performance gains. Physical game discs have not escaped either, since production and distribution rely on the same strained logistics.

For consumers, the practical effect is simple. Waiting for a price drop may no longer work the way it once did, because discounts are getting smaller and arriving later. Shop owners report that customers are holding onto older hardware longer, choosing fewer titles, and turning to subscription services instead of buying outright.

Analysts do not expect relief soon. Chipmakers are expanding capacity, but those plants will not come online for years. Until supply and demand find a better balance, the cost of playing the latest games will likely keep rising.
