Moonmilk Games is building Cave Expedition with an unusual commitment to authenticity. The studio is using real cave scans, field recordings, and years of personal caving experience to shape how the game looks and sounds. Instead of inventing an underground world from scratch, the team pulls directly from actual caves they have explored.
That approach affects nearly every part of the experience. Textures come from photogrammetry captured inside real caverns, so rock walls carry the same cracks, damp patches, and mineral streaks found underground. Audio is handled the same way. Drips, echoes, and the low rumble of tight passages were recorded on location rather than created in a studio.
The developers say their caving background matters just as much as the technical tools. Knowing how a passage narrows, how sound behaves in a large chamber, or how darkness changes a person's sense of direction helps the team design spaces that feel believable. Small details, like the weight of a headlamp beam or the way a crawl space forces slow movement, are drawn from firsthand trips.
Cave Expedition aims to offer tension without relying on monsters or cheap scares. The cave itself becomes the challenge. Players will need to read the environment, manage limited gear, and stay calm when the route ahead is unclear. According to the studio, the goal is not to simulate every technical skill, but to capture the feeling of being deep underground where every sound and surface tells you something.
The game is still in development, and no release date has been announced.
