Mark Chambers, lead artist on Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2, has explained how the team built a pixel art style that feels genuinely retro without simply copying the look of old hardware. In a discussion about the sequel's visual direction, Chambers said the crisp pixels players see on screen are not what they appear to be at first glance.
According to Chambers, the studio did not rely on strict low resolution rendering to achieve the effect. Instead, the artists painted and animated at a higher level of detail, then carefully reduced and tuned the results so the final image reads as authentic sprite work. The goal was to capture the spirit of classic shooters while giving the team room to add modern lighting, effects and animation that would have been impossible on the machines that inspired the original games.
Chambers noted that true authenticity comes from restraint rather than raw technical limits. The team studied how older games used limited color palettes, chunky silhouettes and readable shapes to communicate action at speed, then applied those lessons to a modern pipeline. Enemies and weapons were designed to stay legible during chaotic fights, with contrast and motion prioritized over fine detail.
He also said the sequel pushes further than the first game, with more varied environments and more elaborate sprite work, but the underlying philosophy remains the same. The pixels may look sharp and clean, yet every element is shaped by rules borrowed from an era when artists had far fewer tools at their disposal. Boltgun 2 aims to honor that legacy while still feeling like a contemporary release.
