A Plague Tale: Requiem arrives as a follow-up that does many things well but ultimately struggles to match the impact of its predecessor. The game presents players with a visually striking world and refined mechanics, yet the narrative execution leaves something to be desired.
The sequel continues the story of Amicia and Hugo as they navigate a dangerous medieval landscape filled with rats and political intrigue. The atmosphere remains thick with tension, and the improved stealth systems give players more options when approaching encounters. Combat feels more responsive, and the environmental puzzles offer satisfying challenges that encourage creative thinking.
However, the storytelling does not maintain the same quality throughout. The rising action feels rushed in places, with certain plot points resolved too quickly to carry emotional weight. Character development suffers as a result, leaving some relationships feeling underdeveloped compared to the first game. Players may find themselves less invested in the fates of supporting characters who receive limited screen time.
The pacing issues become more apparent as the game progresses. Moments that should feel climactic instead feel abrupt, and the emotional beats do not land as effectively as they could. While the voice acting and music remain strong, the script does not always give the performers enough to work with.
A Plague Tale: Requiem is far from a failure. It offers solid gameplay and a compelling world to explore. But as a sequel, it does not quite reach the heights of its predecessor. The foundation is there, but the execution falls short in key areas.
