5 Best Pirate Video Games Of All Time, Ranked

October 4, 2026 - 02:50

The pirate genre has always held a strange grip on video games. Something about freedom on the open water, a crew at your back, and the promise of buried gold keeps players coming back. Here are five titles that stand above the rest.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag put players in the boots of Edward Kenway, a pirate who fought and sailed across the Caribbean. Naval combat felt weighty, and boarding enemy ships never got old.

Sea of Thieves took a different path. This shared-world game focused on cooperation, letting crews sail together, hunt treasure, and battle rival ships. Its cartoon look hid a deep social experience.

Sid Meier's Pirates! remains a classic. Players could trade, duel, and romance their way across the Spanish Main. The mix of strategy and action gave it lasting appeal.

The Secret of Monkey Island delivered humor and clever puzzles. Guybrush Threepwood's journey proved that a pirate story could be funny without losing its sense of adventure.

Finally, Skies of Arcadia traded oceans for open skies. Airship battles and a sense of discovery made it a cult favorite that still holds up today.

Each game captures a different side of pirate life. Together they show why this setting refuses to sink.
